In the winter of 1982, an expedition to the Antarctic goes horribly wrong after a group of scientists unearthed something they shouldn't have. What results is a film that masterfully set feelings of dread and paranoia upon me like not many films have been able to do. I'd honestly suggest you stop reading right now and check out this horrific cult classic for yourself with as little spoilers as possible. You won't be disappointed.
The thing (pun unintended) that makes The Thing work so well in making the viewer paranoid is just how well-written the plot and characters are. Usually, I will not care too much about the characters in the average horror flick since they're usually idiots who make stupid decisions for the sake of the plot. This creates a disconnect that allows you to watch from a safe distance since you don't see the characters as real people.
But in The Thing, the characters are refreshingly capable in the face of absolute horrors. Each character, though they may make wrong choices, feels real and justified in their motivations. Because the characters are so well-written and all seem to do things that make sense, it only heightens the paranoia of who is really what they say they are. I'm very excited to rewatch the movie knowing the ending to see if I can catch any hints that lead to the final conclusion.
The writing and well-realized characters aren't the only reason to rewatch however. The film is just gorgeous. Absolutely disgusting at times with some real revolting body horror from the talented Rob Bottin, but mesmerizing all the same. I must shout out the amazing color direction of the movie with its deep blues highlighted by bursts of red. It really captures the eerie beauty of the Antarctic desert.
Out of all the films I watched during this Halloween Movie Marathon this year, this one stands above as my favorite. This is some good ass effective horror that had me at the edge of my seat all the way to the end. It's a cult classic for a reason so do yourself a favor and watch it if you haven't already. I know it took me way too long to.
